Disco innovator, gifted cellist and singer-songwriter Arthur Russell has been memorialised over the past few years with countless reissues, a documentary film called Wild Combination and a forthcoming book by dance music scholar Tim Lawrence entitled Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92.

Until now, however, there has never been a project among contemporary dance producers to reinterpret his work on a grand scale. Electric Minds, however, will attempt to fill this niche when they release Go Bang: A Tribute to Arthur Russell next month. The London-based imprint has enlisted Yam Who?, Ilija Rudman, Faze Action, Mark E and many others to tackle Russell's oeuvre with a collection of covers and remixes. "In the Light of a Miracle," "Pop Your Funk" and, of course, "Go Bang" are all given the treatment, and you can expect many others to also get an airing when the label gathers Maurice Fulton, Bill Brewster, Yam Who?, Faze Action and a host of others on November 27th at The Garage in London to celebrate the CD's release.

In conjunction with the night's festivities, we've teamed up with the label to give away an Arthur Russell prize pack that includes the aforementioned DVD, forthcoming book and all of the music listed below. If you plan on being in London in November and want to get in the running, hit the RA competition page to get in the running.

Fri, 15 Jan 2010This review couldn't be further from the reality. A great album from start to finish.

Wed, 23 Dec 2009Maybe you are the modern version of Arthur Russell that Daniel is looking for. I'm of the view that the purists/record collectors/dj's are actually strangling good music by hoarding the good unknown stuff until they are short of a few bob. Then they put out a bootleg so everyone can enjoy it, whilst cashing in big time. All at the original artists expense. Now if that isn't bad Karma? None of the artists on this album have sampled as much as a nano second of Arthur's original music (As far as I... More

Wed, 23 Dec 2009The more I listen to this album, the more I fail to understand some of the negative comments on this thread. The genesis of the project, the support it's received from AR's estate, the musicians involved and the positive feedback from the upper echelons of the musical fraternity are important: they go to show that this is a heavyweight endeavour and not some cynical, clinical cash-in. The fact that some of the 'purists' may be unconvinced doesn't detract from that. Accepting that taste is... More

Tue, 22 Dec 2009Gary Darling.... This album isn't for you. It probably wasn't intended for you in the first place my dear. You already know (or think you know) the music of Arthur Russell. This is for those people that have heard the tunes being played out and liked them... bought the CD and then.... learned something about Arthur Russell and low and behold gone out and bought some of his music. I'm beginning to think that all people in dance music these days are a bunch of posers. That means you too Gary Plant

ummm after reading the review I feel like i have to justify this album a bit as I feel its a bit harsh. most of the tracks were created by a full band so there was nothing simple in re-creating Russell's music, there arent many producers or musicians that can !! Rather than sampling or editing over 15 musicians spent 6 months recreating their own covers; just because they start with a beat doesn't mean they are clinical. RA have failed to mention that the original musicians... More
