DJ Download goes into administration, Juno steps in

The online music store will be propped up by their competitor Juno in a deal struck late last night.

Online music store DJ Download have been placed into administration by the company's directors, although rivals Juno will continue to keep the website afloat.

In a frenzied 24 hours for online music retailer DJ Download, the formerly Ministry Of Sound part-owned store announced that they would enter into administration via an e-mail statement (below), before key competitor Juno stepped in to effectively save them.

"It is with great regret that we have to inform you that DJdownload Limited has been placed into administration by the Directors of the company effective today," read the statement from the company's founder Justin Pearse. "The Directors have worked extremely hard over the past few months to try and save the company: overheads were reduced and attempts to increase revenues were made but ongoing efforts to raise further finance were unsuccessful. Despite their best efforts the company was not able to continue to trade. We would like to thank you for your support and business over the years and we wish you all the best in the future."

Under the newly agreed arrangement, the administrators will still be called in, with the website continuing to trade via Juno's content and administrative guidance. The front-end experience, however, will remain the same, with Juno taking care of all back-end operations.

"DJ Download is a pioneer in digital music and a key player in the dance music business", said Juno founder Richard Atherton. "We believe that with the combined strength of the Juno and DJdownload brands, we can make the download market more competitive and improve customer choice."comment 21 Comments

All things being equal, I believe it's a matter of timing mixed with recognizable names on an artist roster to your foot in the door.

Let's face facts my label project wouldn't have gotten off the ground if I signed DJ Smithers - Pumping Bass Jam (Dub Version), Ben Tramp feat. Sassy Fox - Exxxtasy (Original Mix), George Washinton Jr. - United (Bedroom DJ Unreleased Mix), KoolMoDITTLES - Minimal In Yo' Face backed with killer B side... More

Well, lets make things all clear so everyone dont make mistakes on their judgements.

Beatport was like other in its genre, one of he first digital music stores on the web, and since their begin, they stablished several 'partners that brought content' to their selling selling system.

By the mid 2008, they simply and without any typeof warning or whatsoever they ended all the partnerships after having concentrated a huge slice of market into their stores and leavi9ng... More

Fri, 13 Nov 2009Right now Beatport are said to sell around 70% of all dance music. That is quite a huge share of the pie. It explains why almost every label is obsessed with getting in with them. But I dont think that is going to last for many reasons. The industry needs a few big stores and a few smaller niche ones, just like it was with all the vinyl distros. There are far to much just now. The general idea that a labels music has to be on every possible download store is a false economy. What the... More

Fri, 13 Nov 2009Beatport - Still owe money to BPI, PRS and MCPS for the years they were operating in this country without being paid up members. On principle I have boycotted them for this reason. This is where DJ downloads did the right thing and paid up from the start increasing there costs (8% - of every track sold to the collection societies).

Of all three : DJ downloads, Juno and Beatport I find the User experience the best on DJ Downloads, Worst on Juno and average on Beatport.

Juno have go more... More
