  • Remute has completed work on his latest album, which will see a release in March. The prolific Hamburg-based producer—real name Denis Karimani—has previously lent his work to various popular German imprints such as Dial, Areal, Trapez, Tresor and liebe*detail, but for the moment he's concentrating on elevating the status of his own Remute label, which also will be the home of The Orgy, his third studio full-length. Karimani has always prided himself on mixing up different types of house, minimal and techno, and will again shift stylistically on his latest effort, this time pairing up the brash minimal house of cuts like "The Orgy" and "Blaeserli" with cut-up disco-house ("Absolutely," "Good News") and spacious ambient works ("Everything," "Nothing"). The self-released nature of the album has meant that Denis has been able to customise the packaging in his own idiosyncratic fashion, including a sample of his own blood with each of the CD editions of the record. "Hop" will be included as an exclusive track on the CD version, but it will see a digital release on Sleaze Records at a later date. We caught up with Denis via e-mail to ask him about the record, blood-letting, and what his plans are for the rest of the year.
Most of your recent releases seem to be self-released. Is there any particular reason behind this change in practice? Running my own label gives me 100% artistic freedom without ANY compromise! There are barely no other labels with balls around, who are willing to take some risks and create an exciting product, which doesn't sound like the recent trend, so I do it on my own. It's as simple as that! Is the record much of a departure from last year's Grand Glam? What has influenced you this time around? Grand Glam was a quite melodic release with even some funky pop elements. The Orgy, by contrast, is much more dance floor-orientated and provides more straight-line classic techno moments, but also has some ambient excursions in order to relax and breathe deeply for some minutes before, between or after the orgy. A lot of this new stuff was recorded on the fly during my live sets around the globe... The dancing crowd is my greatest influence! You're packaging the record with your own blood. How did you go about doing that? a) A small cut into my upper arm. *ouch!* b) Blood dripping into a cup. c) Drizzling a small drop of blood on a small sheet of paper. d) Pasting this small sheet of paper into the DigiPak. Et voilá! The very special, hand-packaged and limited "collector's item" is finished! From the heart. Literally. Tell us a little bit about the reasoning behind the album title. For me "orgy" is a synonym for the most extreme act of losing control and concentrating on enjoying all senses without thinking about correctness, cautiousness or courtliness: Let it all go! In my opinion the techno world has had enough of shallow, harmless and drowsy tunes, like unfortunately for example a lot of the stuff from my home city Hamburg, which is quite nice and well produced, but somehow highly unsatisfying on the whole. So I prefer to go in the fast lane and provide a "global orgy," for all the people out there, who also had enough of all that. The sound of The Orgy is raw, gruff and direct. It's honest. Now the fun begins! What else have you got coming up in 2010? I will showcase my new products at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami. Besides all my releases, I will present a brand new stunning technical gadget especially conceived for my livesets at the WMC. It's top secret right now, but it's gonna "captivate the audience"... promise! Furthermore, I am featuring fresh producers on my sub-label RemuteD every month. So I just released an amazing tune by Oculus (a highly talented guy from Iceland, recently part of the GusGus tour) and made a 60 minute remix for it. The longest techno remix in history! And of course there's gonna be a huge "Global Orgy" Remute tour this year. Watch out! And don't forget: Let it all go!
