Thomas Fehlmann will issue his first solo full-length in nearly three years at the end of March.

He may now be 52 years of age, but Fehlmann's passion for electronic music certainly doesn't seem to be waning. In the early-'90s he teamed up with Moritz von Oswald and Juan Atkins to work under the 3MB moniker, and has also been brought in as a member of The Orb, but his four solo albums still stand tall as some of his greatest acheivements. For Gute Luft, which was originally commissioned to form the soundtrack for the 24-hour documentary film 24h Berlin, Fehlmann has decided to revisit his previous work, commenting that, "There are also more subtle connections that should give an overall feel to the score. I also brought in elements of tunes from my previous albums in recognition of the fact that I often feel that there would be so many more ways to explore and experiment with certain ideas than just on a single track."

Of course, Fehlmann didn't soundtrack the entirety of the film, sharing scoring duties with another musician that worked separately, and due to him not having the final decision about what to use, plenty of his creations didn't make the final cut. Gute Luft, therefore, is a way for him to edit down the hours of music that he created for the project, and get it out to the public. It's very much a Thomas Fehlmann album, mixing dubwise Berlin techno sounds with elements of classic Detroit house, retaining the shimmering melodies that Fehlmann has made his trademark. Commenting on the album's title, Fehlmann remarks that, "While scoring the film and subsequently shaping it into a album, I found myself questioning what holds it all together in Berlin. I figured that air, the good old Berliner Luft, is something that is guaranteed to touch everyone and everything in the city."

Tue, 19 Oct 2010i find it hard not to listen to this album... its perfect music to, and this might sound a bit odd (or even pretentious, not sure), rethink one's approach to being in an urban space. there's something optimistic, introspective, and just objectively and aesthetically beautiful about fehlmann's production on this album that fits so well with listening on headphones while walking about / commuting on buses, subways, etc. / etc. but doesn't make it dark and frightening like it can sometimes be.... More

Sat, 08 May 2010Fehlmann makes it sound so effortless to make great music. This doesn't sound like a soundtrack album at all. Every track is quality and not a dud or filler on it. Hats off to Fehlmann. The guy is genius.
