  • Following on from last month's Carl Craig appearance, New York duo Sleepy & Boo bring another Detroit innovator to Basic NYC this Friday, the Wizard himself, Jeff Mills for his most recent conceptual performance. The practitioners of Detroit techno have always upheld their own specific machine aesthetic throughout their long history, but one man who has consistently pushed the envelope with his retro-futurist leanings is Mills. Utilizing many of his favorite motifs, Tomorrow Plus X spins a story set in some parallel future universe, where a mysterious force is invading humanity's consciousness and trying to scramble the "scales of the truth/balance." The flyer provides some interesting context:
In the future, it has been discovered that when humans believe they are sleeping, their bodies and consciousness are, in fact, taken over by an unknown element entitled 'X'. In religion, this entity would be known as the dark forces of evil; in science, it would be known as dark matter. "X" is the negativity (-) in our Universe. There is no way to control it, we can only counterbalance it with an opposing negative force. Minimal music and the subsonic sounds it projects is one of those opposing forces.
Elaborate plot aside, if Mills' last appearance at Basic NYC is any indication, you can expect a relentless techno onslaught with loads of exclusive new material to boot. Support comes from residents Sleepy & Boo and Love Sound Project's Chris Love and Billy Belmont.
