- For their 100th release, the English label has collected productions by the disco remix pioneer.
Later this summer, early dance music innovator Tom Moulton will be celebrated on a new CD, Philly ReGrooved - Tom Moulton Remixes.
Beginning in the early '70s, Moulton devised a style of "mixing down" records that became essential to DJs and dance music culture. In short, Moulton's technique involved taking away elements from the original multi-track, repeating important melodies and passages and altering the frequencies so the record sounded better at high volume. Disco DJs loved playing Moulton's mixes in clubs, and by the end of his career he was a dance music icon, earning recognition at 2004's Dance Music Hall of Fame for his remix work. But Moulton himself never fully embraced nightclub culture, famously claiming "I never made a dance record, I made records you can dance to."
Philly ReGrooved collects Moulton's reworks of songs from the soul and disco label Philly Groove Records. Having been released before the advent of the 12-inch single, the bulk of Philly Groove's best output was originally available only on 7-inch, until Moulton was commissioned to remix them. The collection will be the 100th release on Harmless Records, a UK-based label whose compilations have covered virtually all eras of dance music, from African '70s funk to contemporary New York house.
