DJ History has revealed details for Trax 25, a compilation that shows contemporary artists re-editing selections from classic Chicago house label Trax Records.

Founded by Larry Sherman and Rachael Cain in 1984, Trax released dozens of early house anthems by artists like Virgo, DJ Pierre, Frankie Knuckles and Larry Heard. It's also credited for helping develop the squelchy sound of acid house, thanks in part to the 1988 compilation Acid Trax. Along with DJ International Records, Trax was one of Chicago's most important labels during its house heyday.

The new compilation was cooked up by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, co-authors of Last Night a DJ Saved My Life and the pair behind the DJ History website. "The thought of getting our hands on Trax made our palms sweaty with excitement," says Brewster. "The fact that there were few mutli-tracks remaining and most of the original master tapes had either been wiped or lost was a shame, but it also meant that the producers who worked on the project would have to be resourceful, eking out juice from limited resources... We're confident that, although they've been meddled with, the meddling has been done with such care, love and respect that we've merely rejuvenated them for modern dance floors."

Contributions come from relatively unknown bedroom producers as well as recognized house and techno artists, including Mark Broom, KiNK and John Daly (who reworks Larry Heard's classic "Can You Feel It"). Some notorious crate diggers and edit-masters appear as well, such as Greg Wilson, Leo Zero and JD Twitch of Optimo. The compilation will see release at the beginning of next year.

Sun, 27 Feb 2011anyway why do they need to pay the original artists? it is the remixers who did all the hard work to improve these bad records and make them modern and listenable

Sun, 27 Feb 2011this is one of the best albums this year

pure analog phatness and authentic house vibe

if you dont like this album then i guess youre just jelous because you didnt get asked to make a track on this great album

lets face it most of these original records are unplayable due to terrible vinyl presses and pooor mastering. this album updates it for the modern age and sounds so much better than all those old records

i think every remix on here is an improvement on the original and will... More

Sun, 27 Feb 2011I'm sure someone from DJH will be on here to defend it but I'm sure it's a 100% legit licensed compilation.

Sat, 26 Feb 2011Actually, blackmarket is right here. I've actually had the chance to see the paper work and happen to have a real knowledge on the Trax copyrights. It is a really complex matter but unfortunately all the artists should have been paid and are still not compensated. @Tom... The story doesn't end with Casablanca Trax. I am calling you about it actually.

Wed, 23 Feb 2011Thats fair enough but it's down to naivety by the artists in the first place, whether they are black or not doesn't really come into it, no big conspiracy, just good music being butchered for legitimate profit

Blackmarket1wrote
Tue, 22 Feb 2011If your annoyed then think how the artists feel. A couple of points - all will be revealed soon enough and I think a few peoples views will change on this.
Master recordings were not just sold off without Rights- there was paper work - Terms. Everyone has been sold the party line for so long that people believe it - but I have to tell you the artists have genuine case - its edging on fraud.
We can not suffer a situation like what happened to Blues and Reggae artists from the past - and then... More
