- The German experimental artist will release a new album this month.
Hamburg-based experimental artist Felix Kubin will release a new album called Echohaus later this month on the German label Dekorder.
Kubin is a self-described dadaist who claims to have been making music since the age of eight. He got started on the organ and glockenspiel, but his creativity really took off in the early '80s when picked up his first synthesizer, the Korg MS-20. Since then, his projects have ranged from avant-garde electronic compositions to what he terms "sci-fi pop," with the occasional odd detour into animated productions and radio plays. Though his style never stays the same for long, his sound is influenced as much by early electronic acts like Kraftwerk as it is by 20th century composers like Karleinz Stockhausen.
Echohaus marks another left turn for the eccentric producer. The album is basically an experiment in acoustics: Kubin composed music for the contemporary chamber group Ensemble Integrales, then placed each member in a different room of Westwerk, an alternative art space in Germany, and had them all play simultaneously. The idea is that the differing acoustics of each room would give the final result a unique aural character. The album was mixed over several months by Kubin and German production engineer Tobias Levin.
