Brisbane’s Premier Live Music Venue is FOR SALE.

Joint owner/managers of Brisbane’s most enduring live music venue, Joc Curran & C Smith have announced that THE ZOO is up for sale. After a very successful ten years the pair have decided to sell the business to allow themselves to pursue new ideas and ventures.

Established in 1992 on "the smell of an oily rag", THE ZOO opened its doors as a BYO pool hall but over the years has become an icon for Brisbane’s ever blossoming music scene. Bands such as Powderfinger, George, Regurgitator, Screamfeeder and countless others have all benefited from THE ZOO’s support in their early days. The venue still gives newcomers a leg up, while also regularly playing host to an array of national and international music heavyweights. Powderfinger guitarist Ian Haug said, "THE ZOO is the most important venue in Brisbane. Apart from an undeniable, never ending list of Australian and world recognised bands that have played there, and they and everyone present have loved it, THE ZOO is a breeding ground for new acts of all kinds." Beyond live music, THE ZOO has played host to theatre productions, comedy, dance clubs, weddings, wakes, visual art exhibitions, film festivals, cabaret, dance classes and the list goes on.

On a personal note, Smith added "For Joc & myself, leaving THE ZOO is kind of like moving out of home for the first time, but we both keen to explore other ideas. We know that whoever buys The Zoo will have fun! It’s a stable business but every night is different"

Interested parties should contact C Smith on 0409 059 270.

Tue, 07 May 2002The zoo is the best place in town; especially for live gigs. A very grundgy atmosphere - excellent for bands but not much visual infrastructure(lights etc.) for raves and dance nights. But Brisbane needs to hold on to these types of places as dance music is all too easy for most nightclub owners and the 'live scene' has basically died there.long live the zoo...
