  • Andy Stott has finished a new mini-album called Passed Me By, due out next month on Modern Love. The double 12-inch is Stott's first long player since 2006's Merciless. In the years since then, the Mancunian producer has continued to pump out a steady stream of dub techno records for Modern Love, while also making dubstep, breakbeat and the odd bit of juke under the name Andrea, both on his own and with Miles Whittaker (as Millie). Passed Me By has a distinctly different style than any of those releases: the tempo is lower, the beats are less tidy and the overall aesthetic is much more destroyed. Talking via e-mail this week, Stott helped put his new music in context.
When and where did you produce the album? What was your creative process like? These tracks were written towards the back end of 2010, I'd say from about September onwards. In that time I had moved in with the missus, so some of the tracks were done in my old house but the majority of them were made with a sort of part time set-up at my new place. So as a result, the creative process was scatty. Getting bits of tracks done when I could, getting tracks finished when I could, there always seemed to be something that needed doing which was getting in the way of me writing anything, but things settled down and I managed to get my teeth into it a bit more. What were some of your main influences at the time, musical or otherwise? Over the period when I was writing these tracks I wasn't really listening to any new music, in fact I was barely listening to anything except for maybe some Ariel Pink, Hype Williams, Arthur Russell, Actress. I got into watching juke clips on YouTube, but that was influence for another project really. Did you set out to create something different from your past work, or did that just happen naturally? I didn't sit down and think "right let's go in this direction," I just found that the pace of my tracks had slowed down and become quite dense and broken. I had just starting writing with a different approach, I liked the feel of how things were changing since my last release (the Tell Me Anyting 12-inch)–that was the start of this new way of writing for me. Passed Me By is just where it all ended up. What's next for you? The next thing for me will be to keep writing and start listening again. Might have a bash at some soft rock ballads.
