  • London club night ManMakeMusic will launch a new record label next month, beginning with a 12-inch from DJ and producer George FitzGerald. ManMakeMusic got its start a few years ago, when Fitzgerald, Amit Gudka (AKA Another Amit), Mixcloud co-founder Nikhil Shah and a few other university friends started throwing illegal warehouse parties in Hackney. Soon they made it official and set up shop in various small clubs and bars, now landing at Star of Bethnal Green. Since the beginning, the sound of the night was a blend of house, techno, dubstep and garage—an amalgamation that's only recently become in vogue. The new label will continue in this vein, flirting with 4/4 beats the same way their parties do. Chatting via email earlier this week, we caught up with the crew behind the label to find out what's in store from ManMakeMusic.
London is a pretty crowded market when it comes to parties. What do you try to bring to the scene? We've done quite a few parties around London now, and the fact that we've got such a close crew who come to pretty much every event has always made the atmosphere very special. The intimate vibe of our nights hopefully bypasses the over-hyped and overpriced nature of a lot of London's clubland. Also, in terms of programming we always try to focus on exhibiting the talents of one or maximum two DJs at a time. In a club landscape where promoters almost always overcrowd line-ups at the expense of musical coherence, we feel this really stands out as an approach. Tell us a bit about George Fitzgerald. What attracted you to him? George has been involved in ManMakeMusic since day one, and has been the driving force in getting the label on its feet. It made total sense for his release to be first up—his sound, and these two tracks in particular, feel like they sum up where the sound of the ManMakeMusic parties is today. Do you have any other releases in the pipeline you can tell us about? Our next full release will be one from Jack Dixon and Rick Grant, including a very special remix from Kevin Mcphee. We also have a release with Objekt in the pipeline, which we're very excited about. On top of that, we’ve got a bunch of weird and wonderful ‘unknowns’ from within our stable who we look forward to showcasing over the next few months. Releasing records can seem like an uphill battle these days. What inspired you to enter the fray? After five years of running parties, we've come across a tight group of people making really interesting stuff—so many close friends and family have been working on music that hits the nail on the head in terms or what we're into and what we want to hear at our nights. As a platform for us to put this music out the label was a logical progression—an opportunity to get the essence of the nights, and what this network of people is doing, pressed up on vinyl and in the public domain.
The launch party for ManMakeMusic's new label will take place at The Star of Bethnal Green on Saturday 6th August. Fitzgerald and the other residents will be joined by another champion of house and garage hybrid, Aus Music and Simple Records founder Will Saul. Tracklist A1 Fernweh B1 Hearts ManMakeMusic will release Fernweh / Hearts on August 29th, 2011.
