  • September is one of the best months in Ibiza. The oppressive heat and humidity of August has subsided, friends and workers united by the arduous season behind them take to the dance floor and the mass tourism declines too. With families back to school and students looking towards university, the island feels like it's full of "clubbers." The parties make an extra effort as well. They'll host their biggest lineups, the clubs stay open later than usual and, of course, the closing parties begin. The final party, by definition, acts as a huge pull. People know it's the last chance to dance and so, often regardless of the lineup, crowds will be up for it in a way that you simply don't see in August. Carl Cox was among the first to close up shop this season. This past Tuesday at Space featured DJ Sneak, Yousef and Monika Kruse in the Terraza and the small matter of Cox, Loco Dice and tINI in the Discoteca. Dice's sole non-Amnesia club appearance has become an annual event, and the occasion brought the best out of him. His set was pure runaway train techno—full of energy and flair—and was a marked contrast to his previous week showing at Cocoon, which was fairly monotonous. Later on, Cox and Dice sparred over the course of a four hour back-to-back session, with the club practically full way past the traditional closing time of 7 AM. We will explore more about the highs and the lows in Ibiza in an end-of-season review, but I've made no secret in expressing just how successful this year has been for Cox at Space. The closing party was no exception. DC-10's Wednesday affair From Disco to Techno rounded off the previous week with a Hot Creations bash starring Jamie Jones, Art Department, Richy Ahmed and Robert James. Their en vogue sound was omnipresent all night. It was perhaps most fascinating, though, to notice the dynamic and type of crowd in attendance. Arriving early, there were a disproportionate amount of young British clubbers compared to typical DC-10 sessions and a very strong female presence as well. We'll be following up next week with reports from more of the closing parties: There are some absolute monster bashes at We Love, Cocoon (and after-party), Kehakuma and Sasha at Ushuaia. By most standards, it's hardly a calm weekend. Relatively speaking, though, it marks a strong storm before the hurricane season finale when Amnesia, Space and DC-10 eventually close the week after.
