- Due out in February, the French duo's next album is a soundtrack to the 1902 silent film.
Air's next album will be a soundtrack to the 1902 silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune.
Directed by Georges Méliès, Le Voyage dans la Lune ("A Voyage to the Moon") is an iconic 16-minute feature that's considered one of the first science fiction films ever. Air originally scored the film for a screening at Cannes this past May, but after the project was finished they decided to expand it into a full album. Le Voyage dans la Lune features core members Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel with vocal appearances from Au Revoir Simone and Victoria Legrand of Beach House. Godin says the finished product is "undoubtedly more organic" than Air's past work. "Everything is played live," he says. "We wanted it to sound 'handmade,' 'knocked together,' a bit like Méliès' special effects."
Le Voyage dans la Lune will be available as as stand-alone album, or in an expanded version featuring a DVD with the colorized version of the film complete with Air's soundtrack. The latter will be "strictly limited" to 70,000 copies.
