BBC Radio 1 have announced some big changes to their dance music programming that will go into effect as of April next year.

A group of veteran hosts will be leaving the station: Judge Jules, Kissy Sell Out, Fabio & Grooverider and Gilles Peterson. They'll make room for Toddla T, Charlie Sloth, Friction and Skream & Benga.

The two dubstep pioneers will host Friday nights from 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM, after Annie Mac and Pete Tong, both of whom keep their current slots. Toddla T, a part of In New DJs We Trust since 2009, will now host his own show on Fridays from 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM. Friction will host a drum & bass show on Mondays, from 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM. Radio 1 have also announced the addition of a new program called BBC Radio 1 Residency, which will feature a rotating cast of DJs that includes Heidi, Chuckie and Kutski.

Aside from Kissy Sell Out, who joined Radio 1 in 2008, all of the exiting DJs have been with the station for more than a decade. Peterson said in a statement: "I've had an amazing 13 years at Radio 1—to be able to get away with the radical music that I've pushed out has always surprised me and I thank Radio 1 for giving me the freedom to do that." He's allegedly planning something with BBC Radio 6.

Fri, 13 Jan 2012Long live the Kissy Klub... Kissy Sell Out has ruined the rest of dance music for me - was up the front at Tod Terij in the sub club the other week and I was fucking bored having listed to nothing but electro speed garage for the last year... Fair enough, a lot of the shows they are replacing are outdated and ceased to be relevant years ago, but Kissy is the only genuine Electro DJ on R1, so why cut him - presumably because of ratings... They have misjudged the loyal and cult following that he... More

Tue, 13 Dec 2011I wonder if Skream & Benga's show is just going to be them playing their own dubs ad infinitum? That sort of works when you see them playing at a club, but it would be a waste of a Radio Station's mission to introduce new music from new people...looking forward to the first track list ;-)

Mon, 12 Dec 2011Just spotted this news and it's a sad day when there's no room for a legend like Gilles at R1 but i'm sure he'll do something even better; good to see his ex[producer] Benji B getting the call and Heidi & Toddla T will def. be worth a listen [even so, Delectabeats is a good alternative]

Thu, 08 Dec 2011good to see friction taking over from fabio and groovrider. hopefully more rollers and less jump up there. skream & benga can do one, toddla t obviously getting sorted out via annie mac.

shame gp has gone but a bit of Kutski once a month will be nice
