Harmless will release an extensive series of compilations next year in honor of Philadelphia International Records 40th anniversary, including two collections of edits.

Philadelphia International was founded in 1971 by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and quickly became famous for a style known as Philadelphia soul. Within two years it was among the largest black-owned companies in the US, second only to Berry Gordy's legendary Motown label. But while Gordy eventually sold Motown off (today it's a subsidiary of Universal Music Group), Gamble and Huff never let go of their label—four decades later, it remains in independent and in their ownership.

Of the several compilations Harmless has in the pipeline, two are focused on edits of Philadelphia's back catalogue. The first, due out on January 16th, collects 21 new versions of old Philadelphia tracks, including one by Norwegian disco artist Todd Terje. The second will come out a month later, and will feature four discs of edits by one of disco's most important innovators, Tom Moulton. For the serious soul fans, there's also a ten CD box in the works for February, details of which are still forthcoming.

Fri, 09 Dec 2011Archie Bell and the Drells’ “Tighten Up,” originally a B-side, was re-released in 1968 and shot to number one. Bell couldn’t enjoy its success; he had been drafted and was in a hospital recovering from a wound suffered in Vietnam. Rockaeology at bit.ly/nb5agz tells how few knew what Bell looked like, so phony Archie Bell and the Drells groups popped up around the country. To combat this, the Drells toured with member James Wise impersonating Archie.
