- For its debut release, the new label from Andy Votel and Demdike Stare will reissue Ciani's ultra-rare first album.
Later this month, Demdike Stare and Andy Votel of Finder's Keepers will launch Dead-Cert, a new offshoot of their label Pre-Cert Home Entertainment.
In his review of their first collaborative LP on Pre-Cert (as Slant Azymuth), Jordan Rothlein said Votel and Demdike stare "[recall] electronic music's radiophonic beginnings." Dead-Cert serves a similar purpose, except in this case they're reissuing actual artifacts rather releasing new music by themselves or their contemporaries. According to a press release, the label will investigate "vintage outsider music, sound sculpture, spoken word, ethnological documents, Art-Trash, early computer music, Neotantrik music, tape manipulation, non-pop and vinyl voyeurism." All of the releases will be on vinyl only.
Dead-Cert will begin with an exceptionally rare LP: Suzanne Ciani's first album, Voices Of Packaged Souls. Cianni was an Italian artist who got her start making electronic sounds on a modular synthesizer for TV commercials and pop songs, while making her own music on the side. In 1970, a sound sculpture she made with the artist Harold Paris was featured in an art gallery in Brussels, and Ciani recorded Voices Of Packaged Souls to accompany the exhibition. Only 50 copies were pressed. The reissue will be available in a run of 1,000, all packaged in screen-printed silver foil to match Paris' original artwork.
