Going to the Motor City this year? Here's your handy guide to what's going on after the festival is over each night.
If you've taken a look at the lineup for the 2012 edition of Detroit's Movement festival, you'll know that it's a typically strong lineup with some of the most intriguing names in electronic music both local and international. But the festival is only a week away, and by this point it's a weekend-long celebration as much as about the plentiful afterparties as it is about the festival.
Events this year rival the festival itself in terms of star-studded lineups and knockout parties, and if you're impatient for the festival to start there's even a whole round of 'em on the Friday night before Movement comes to life on Saturday afternoon. There's so many parties, in fact, that if you try to figure it out once you get there you'll no doubt be a little overwhelmed with choice, so why not plan ahead with our afterparty guide below? Movement doesn't really end at Hart Plaza, and that's never been truer than in 2012.
Even though the actual festival doesn't begin till Saturday afternoon, if you can make it to Detroit a day early, you'll be rewarded handsomely with a number of promising parties. Elysium will be hosting Movement's Official Opening Party, a Life and Death and Visionquest showcase featuring a versus set between Matt Tolfrey and Ryan Crosson, the official live debut of the Life and Death collective, not to mention sets from Clockwork, Thugfucker and Lee Curtiss. Meanwhile Bang Tech will have their usual opening shindig, a completely free party set up in a massive four-floor party at Bookies Tavern that starts early at 3:00 PM and features a huge lineup including DJ Seoul, G. Major and more. Also starting early is Blank Artists & Friends' Movement Pre-Party at Park Bar, where the lineup is headed up by Kevin Reynolds, and for something that starts later at the more club-friendly hour of 10:00 PM, Carl Craig will have Motor City Wine all to himself for a four-hour set.
Alternatively, Chicago's well-loved Smart Bar venue crew are having their own opening party over at TV Lounge—complete with BBQ—featuring Panoramabar resident Prosumer, Chicago locals Kate Simko and Orchard Lounge, and resident DJs from both Chicago and Detroit. If you enter the venue by the rear entrance to the smaller TV Bar, you'll encounter The Tandem and Mixmode's Prelude, where they've got a stacked lineup of Detroit and Chicago locals including Boo Williams, Glenn Underground and Delano Smith.
It's only the first day of Movement proper so you should have plenty of energy ready to burn once the festival portion wraps up, and you'll have plenty of options lined up for you, including some rather prominent showcases. A good starting point might be the Industry Breakfast at TV Lounge, which will run until 6:00 PM with a collection of Chicago DJs including Klectik label boss Jason Patrick and Nathan Drew Larsen of Fresh Meat Records. Not going to make it to Ibiza this summer? You can get a taste of Circoloco at TV Lounge later that night with Seth Troxler, Davide Squillace, and Ellen Allien among a host of others associated with the DC-10 clubnight, while Beretta's "10 Years of Techno" party at The Works features not only the debut of Detroit local hero Omar-S' new live set but also appearances from Aril Brikha and Keith Kemp. React will host James Zabiela and "special guests" at Bleu if you're feeling a bit more big-room on Saturday night, while Lil' Louis will lead his own after party at St. Andrew's Hall, Jimmy Edgar's at a TBA venue, and Love The D. will throw a party with Mark Farina. Meanwhile, at 1515 Broadway, Kai Alce will host Specter and Marcellus Pittman. Bruno Pronsato will play a live set at Loser Techno at the Magic Stick backed up by Kate Simko and Konrad Black, but maybe the most intriguing of all, however? Roller disco with Moodymann for Soul Skate 2012 at Northland Roller Skating Center.
A number of prominent dance music labels have showcases on Saturday night as well, each bringing significant portions of their respective rosters for some impressive lineups. German techno empire CLR will have a bash at Elysium featuring label boss Chris Liebing playing alongside Speedy J, plus Tommy Four Seven and Drumcell, while Point Blank Online will have a Dirtybird-themed party at City Club with Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin and UK hotshot Eats Everything. Upstart Halocyan will have a multi-genre showcase at Temple Bar with John Tejada and Grenier/DJG, and on a more minimal-tinged note, Down & Out will have a party at 1701 Cigar Bar & Lounge with Magda and Troy Pierce. Akufen will make a rare appearance (as Horror Inc) at the Cynosure Showcase at Premium Resto Lounge, and Francis Harris (AKA Adultnapper) will have a Scissor & Thread party at Flat 151.
Whether you're just waking up or still standing from the night before (you wouldn't go all out that early in the weekend, would you?), there's many more options away from the festival on Sunday, starting at sunrise. After two infamous parties at TV Lounge in 2010 and 2011 (and a switch to Monday last year), this year's Shit Show will now take place at Waterfalls from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with another diverse lineup that includes DJ sets from Daniel Bell, Ryan Crosson, Tim Sweeney and Deetron, while Kollektiv Turmstrasse (making their debut, exclusive Detroit appearance) and Public Lover will play live.
For something a bit later in the morning, head to L!V for Drunkbrunch, a free party with local veterans Bruce Bailey and Earl "Mixxin" McKinney. Moving deeper into the afternoon, Soul Foundation returns to Foran's with a Chicago-centric lineup of Kate Simko, Mystic Bill, Frankie Vega and others. Then there's War Horse: located at McShane's (right next to the old Tigers Stadium), this indoor/outdoor party will stretch from 4:00 PM to 5:00 AM with help from New York house and disco selectors Gavin Russom, Eric Duncan and DJ Nature, along with about a dozen other DJs.
As the night creeps in, Waterfalls will be in Rare Form: Maya Jane Coles, Maceo Plex, Soul Clap, Wolf + Lamb, and dOP are just some of the names across that all-star lineup. Elsewhere, Flying Circus Detroit will host Guy Gerber, Audiofly and Lee Curtiss, among others, at City Club and Lars Behrenroth will top the bill on the rooftop at Bookies for Stomp the House 4. Back at TV Lounge, there's The Story Narrated By US, where house favorites Chez Damier, Fred P and Keith Worthy are sure to keep it deep all night. Or, hop on the boat for Voyage Royale IV with Danny Tenaglia, DJ Sneak and Art Department.
And there's more late-night options for those craving hard-hitting techno. Droid Behavior and Blank Code will team up for Interface 36 at The Works, with DVS1, Raiz and DJ Hyperactive all confirmed along with Drumcell and Audio Injection (playing together as Cell Injection). Meanwhile, Interdimensional Transitions and The Bunker will team up again for No Way Back. This year's all-nighter will take place at 1515 Broadway with the usual names like Derek Plaslaiko, BMG and Spinoza. Finally, if you'd like your techno served up by many of the genre's pioneering figures, look no further than KMS 25 at St. Andrews Hall with Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Kenny Larkin, Mike Huckaby, Carl Craig and many others.
If you've made it this far, good. Just be sure to take a shower and stay alert because there's still a ton to take in on Memorial Day. Once again, Old Miami will open its expansive backyard at 7:00 AM for the seventh edition of Need I Say More. Visionquest is in charge of that one again, and while a specific lineup hasn't been announced, expect a sun-kissed mix of local regulars and friends from Circus Company, DFA, Real Tone Records and Bass Culture. Meanwhile, Night Turns to Day at TV Lounge, which will wind down another long weekend of events with Hakim Murphy, DJ Spider and others.
Back at McShane's, MiM will host This Is Us And We Do What We Do, a ten-hour party beginning at 2:00 PM and featuring Chopstick, JohnJon and Till von Sein. For a cozy place to rest your feet, check out Carl Craig's Roots & Inspirations BBQ party at Motor City Wine, but take note of this line on the flyer: "this is not a dance party, but a curated listening experience." Or head to Dystopia at Magic Stick, which will stretch from noon until 3:00 AM, and feature sets from Nation and LIES artists like Traxx, Ron Morelli, D'Marc Cantu and Steve Summers.
Once the clock hits midnight and Hart Plaza closes down for good, you've still got a few more options on the plate, such as the Mixworks 11 Year Anniversary at The Works, with DJ Rolando, Buzz Goree and members of the Detroit Techno Militia. Back at Elysium, Marco Carola will offer up one last big room bash. Last but not least is the fourth annual Hot Creations Detroit closing event at Flat 151, where you can expect a disco-oriented set from Craig Richards along with the party's usual retro jams from Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, among others.
