  • Kastle will provide the inaugural release on his new label Symbols in June. Pittsburgh-raised, San Francisco-based Barrett Richards has previously released music on Starkey's label Seclusiasis and Belgium's Silverback Recordings. According the man himself, Symbols will focus on "forward-thinking electronic music," with its first release—the Stay Forever EP—ranging in tempo from 100 to 130 BPM, exploring hip-hop and house among other styles. For now the label plans to release only digitally and at a brisk bi-weekly pace. Future EPs on Symbols will include music from Cosmic Revenge, Sleepyhead, Jason Burns, Clicks & Whistles and others. You can hear streams of Stay Forever now on the label's official website. RA chatted with Kastle via e-mail to talk about the inspiration and purpose behind the label:
What inspired you to start your own label, and what's the story behind Symbols? I've been considering launching my own label for well over a year now. It's just one way that I am looking to expand moving forward. I've been so adamant on pushing music through my sets, mixtapes, and even running a "song of the day" on my Tumblr. I just feel impelled to do it, you know? During the naming process, I found myself gravitating towards symbols for ideas. I have a passion for ancient history, philosophy and symbolism. One day it just hit me that rather than looking towards one specific symbol, I should just embrace the entire idea. The label will have a strong visual aesthetic with the help of art director, Joyce Su. She will be rotating themes for the artwork every few releases. In the terms you're most comfortable with, how would you describe the music Symbols will release? I've been saying lately that the feeling is the genre. It's what guides me when signing stuff for Symbols. I expect the catalog to become quite diverse and dynamic with club tracks and bedroom jams alike. It'll all mostly fit under the bass music umbrella one way or another. It is digital only for now. I would love to press vinyl if I find that there is a large enough demand. If I did I'd go for more of a collectors edition kind of vibe and focus on an artistic package rather than just for DJs. Why have such a busy, frequent release schedule? I have a lot of great music to release! Although admittedly, I learned a good lesson already in terms of scheduling and signing tracks. I expect to slow the releases down and spread them out after this first batch. As of now I have releases planned up through November. But the nice thing is that they are varied and diverse.
