Mala has recorded an album for Gilles Peterson's ongoing Havana Cultura project, entitled Mala in Cuba.

Havana Cultura is an initiative spearheaded by Peterson that's brought him to Cuba numerous times since 2009 to meet and work with local artists. The project has resulted in two albums so far, Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound and a sequel called The Search Continues.... Given the heavy influence of Jamaican music on UK bass, a dubstep innovator like Mala seems a natural choice for the series.

According to a press release, the Digital Mystikz member traveled to Havana with Peterson and Simbad in May of 2011. While Peterson worked on The Search Continues..., Mala set up shop in a studio across the hall and got started on Mala In Cuba. A steady stream of local talent passed through while he worked, lending the album an added dimension of vocals and live instrumentation. Mala in Cuba is due out in September, and will be preceded by a 12-inch featuring the songs "Cuba Electronic" and "Calle F."

Tracklist
01. Introduction
02. Mulata
03. Tribal
04. Changuito

09. Ghost
10. Curfew

14. Noches Sueños feat. Danay Suarez

Brownswood Recordings will release Mala in Cuba on September 10th, 2012.

Tue, 09 Oct 2012Changuito (Jesus Christ, those war horns are something!), Change and Curfew really hit the spot for me together with a few other tracks which make this a pretty solid album. The ones that work best are those in which both sides of the albums influence have at least some credible contribution and not just post-production tweaks. Admittedly my favourites tend to lean slightly more toward Mala's dark roots. Opposite ends of the spectrum tracks just don't need to be there. For instance, The Tunnel... More
