- Herbert has revived his early pseudonym for a more club-friendly (but still conceptual) album called Tesco.
Matthew Herbert will release a new album in August under his long dormant Wishmountain alias.
Entitled Tesco, the new LP supposedly shows a return to more club-friendly sounds, following Herbert's recent three-part One series. "After all the questioning, controversy, head scratching, mud, straw and blood of the ONE PIG record, I felt like making some old-fashioned dance music." To be fair, "old-fashioned dance music" might be a bit of a stretch. Tesco is still a highly conceptual record: each track is composed of eight sounds from a particular item found on the racks at a Tesco supermarket (the tracklist will tell you which ones).
Herbert's work as Wishmountain always followed this bizarre guideline, from his '96 single Radio to every track on the project's one previous album, Wishmountainisdead (which includes titles like "Salad Tosser," "Cheese Grater" and "Chips"). Herbert says he made the album in four days in the midst of "a spontaneous crunch around the modern supermarket," which he calls "a place of fantasy, trickery, wonder and horror."
Tesco will come out on Herbert's own label, Accidental. It will be preceded by "very limited" 12-inch releases for "Dairy Milk" and "Nescafe," plus a reissue of "Radio," all due out on July 16th.
