  • Steinberg has new versions of their Cubase and Nuendo DAWs on the way in the next few months. With the forthcoming seventh version, Cubase is being both revamped and expanded. At the top of the list of new features is the MixConsole. This new mixing environment was designed to make mixes of all sizes more manageable, with zoom presets, a searchable plugin browser and an embedded channel strip on each track to cut down on the number of plugins needed for basic processing. Metering compliant with the newest standards for loudness (EBU R128, for those looking to get technical) and advanced Voxengo-designed EQ add more heft to Cubase 7's mixing functionality in the full release. (A scaled-back Artist version will also be available.) Another interesting feature included with the complete release is VST Connect SE, which will foster collaborative recording projects over the internet. Steinberg has also added some new features to Cubase with music-makers in mind. A pair of new features called Chord Track and Chord Assistant helps analyze and generate melodies and harmonies. The DAW also includes an expanded library of instruments, presets and loops. Steinberg's post-production-oriented software, Nuendo, is also receiving a makeover, with much of the new mix environment that's coming to Cubase built in. Nuendo 6 will also feature somewhat deeper loudness metering, support for a number of external controllers and a sound effects library geared toward film and video game sound production. Additionally, the sound engine used by both Nuendo and Cubase is getting some slight tweaks to improve performance and reliability. Steinberg will release Cubase 7 and Cubase Artist 7 on December 5th, 2005, for a suggested retail price of 599 and 299 Euro, respectively. Nuendo 6 will be released early in 2013 for a suggested retail price of 1,699 Euro.
