  • Berlin Atonal Festival has announced the first names for its 2013 program, which runs from July 25th through 31st. The festival got its start in the early 1980s as a showcase for some of that era's most experimental acts. Einstürzende Neubauten and Sprung Aus Den Wolken were some of their early bookings, and the event positioned itself as a space where attendees had "the freedom to form thoughts and judgments without slipping into the shitty, prefabricated system set up by idiots," as an early press release put it. This year's edition, titled "Forming Space," draws on the same ethos that drove those early festivals. Only four acts have been announced for 2013, but they give an idea of where the organizers are taking things. Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald will perform the European debut of their recent Borderland collaboration. Trumpeter and electronic composer Jon Hassell will play with his string quartet. Raime and Voices From The Lake are also on the lineup, and both groups will play special audiovisual sets. Many more artists are set to be announced in the coming weeks, with readings, seminars, exhibitions and installations complementing this music. Kraftwerk Berlin, an abandoned power plant that the promoters describe as a "multi-story, multi-roomed industrial maze," will serve as the festival's home base.
