  • Vancouver Urban Spaces Initiative's Special Summer series has announced details for its 2013 season, which kicks off this Sunday. VUSI is a nonprofit organization that aims to repurpose city spaces for community events, and outdoor parties have been on their agenda for a while now. After putting on successful shows in Vancouver parks last summer, they've returned this year in earnest—following a debut with the Mood Hut crew on June 29th, their 2013 schedule takes in four more gigs including a partnership with New Forms Festival. The next event will take place this Sunday, July 14th, at New Brighton Park in the northeastern corner of the city. This one will be headlined by the 10PIN Allstars—a back-to-back set from label heads Max Ulis and Lorne B—as well as Vancouver's own Jesse Bru, Disco 3 and techno staple Miss Myte. Admission will be free. The next two parties take place at downtown's Crab Park on July 27th and August 17th, both with a $10 price tag. The July 27th event will feature rising Detroit-based DJ Jay Daniel headlining, along with Dirt Crew's James Flavour and the local Slow Poke DJs. Victoria veteran Koosh is slated for the August shindig, plus Edmonton residents Bron and Dane, rounded off by Vancouver's Scott W. The series' final show will take place at New Brighton Park on September 15th, and also acts as the last official event for 2013's New Forms Festival, with free admission. Balihu founder Daniel Wang will headline this one, along with Ontario's Rod Skimmins and Vancouver duo Neu Balance, with more acts likely to be announced further down the line.
