  • Finnish experimentalist Mika Vainio and US drone-metal composer Stephen O'Malley have teamed up under the name ÄÄNIPÄÄ, with an album due out next month. Vainio and O'Malley have worked together before: the former's Pan Sonic outfit joined with the latter's band Sunn O))) about five years ago to cover a song from Suicide on Blast First Petite. The result of this collaboration as ÄÄNIPÄÄ is Through A Pre-Memory, a four-track LP for Editions Mego. As Juno Plus report, it was recorded at Einstürzende Neubauten's studio in Berlin over the past three years, and—unsurprisingly, given the wall-of-sound dramatics that each artist has often favored—the label promises that with this one, "MAXIMUM VOLUME YIELDS MAXIMUM RESULTS." With O'Malley directing the artwork, it'll be made available on 2xLP, CD and digital formats. Through A Pre-Memory adds to another busy year for Vainio. Kilo, his latest solo album, came out a few months ago, before the release of a full-length collaboration with Joachim Nordwall called Monstrance and a recent appearance on a Sub Rosa various artists CD. A new album from his Ø moniker, Konstellaatio, will drop in January, and fans of his work with Ilpo Väisänen as Pan Sonic should be happy to know that, according to Darkfloor, a new live album from the duo called Oksastus (their first release since 2010, though it was recorded back in 2009), is on the way—but details from both those fronts are still scarce at the moment. Ahead of Through A Pre-Memory's release, you can try out a track excerpt at the Editions Mego SoundCloud page. Tracklist 01. Muse 02. Toward All Thresholds 03. Mirror Of Mirror Dreams 04.
