- Tracks from the late and little-known US producer will be collected on Born Out Of Cheapness And Frustration, Parts 1 and 2.
Longtime Dutch imprint Bunker Records is preparing to issue twelve tracks from a late Chicago-area producer, named Ellis De Havilland, that date back more than two decades.
As the title suggests, there's an interesting—yet tragic—story behind the two-part release Born Out Of Cheapness and Frustration. According to the Dutch mail-order company Godspill, De Havilland was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, a city in the Chicago metropolitan area that's long been roiled by high rates of violent crime and poverty. (In the early and mid-20th century, Gary was a prosperous focal point of the country's then-massive steel industry.) Living with rough family conditions and having flunked out of high school, De Havilland formed a "regular Friday afternoon habit," starting in 1989, of producing "acid house" on gear at his church, but died in 1991, at age 23, due to a heroin overdose. He never played live, and his music was never released on any label. Apparently, his tapes were found only relatively recently, having been bought at a police auction in Gary. No word yet on a release date, but these two records, on Bunker's new 4000 series, look to be limited to runs of 200 copies each.
