  • Chicago club Smart Bar has announced its roster of 2014 residents, promising "its most ambitious residency program to date," and also shared some details for next year's curated events. Justin Long, already a longtime club regular, has been given the title Senior Resident, and Derrick Carter, Frankie Knuckles are among those continuing their residencies. Innerspace Halflife (the duo of Ike Release and Hakim Murphy), Rahaan, Michael Serafini, Garrett David, Olin, Sassmouth, Orchard Lounge and Jeff Derringer are all part of the team in 2014, along with the Hugo Ball Troupe, comprised of Long, Nathan Drew Larsen, Samone, Sevron, and Marlon Montez, and The Black Madonna, AKA Smart Bar's talent buyer Marea Stamper. The DFA Records crew will be brought into the fold as well, handling the venue's only annual non-local guest residency. The club has also unveiled a "Junior Residents" program for next year, "created to identify and foster emerging talent in Chicago’s dance music community." Clued-in locals will likely be familiar with at least some of these artists: Phillip Stone, Savile, Adam Rowe and the duos Studio Casual and Tied (AKA Max Jacobson and Mantas Steles). To go with all that is Smart Bar's collection of 2014 curated events. That includes We Still Believe, which kicked off a few weeks ago, and Hugo Ball, currently in its second year of regular operation at the club. Then there's the Oktave night curated by Derringer, the seasonal soirée Planet Chicago with Sassmouth, The Black Madonna's Blood, Sweat and Tears, Tied and Samone's Changes. Slack will be curated by Olin with an emphasis on extended sets, and an as-yet unnamed series will see Orchard Lounge take the reins. And, of course, the much-loved GLBT-friendly Queen! party will continue to happen every Sunday night. You can read up on next year's group of residents over at the Smart Bar homepage.
