Mounting debts, decreasing assets and harsh industry conditions has forced the very well known Grand Royal Records [GRR] to close. The Beastie Boys’ famous hip hop label, GRR’s co-founder Mike D said: "This was one of the most difficult decisions we’ve ever had to make”
Beginning in 1993, by the Beastie Boys, acts such as Ben Lee, Luscious Jackson, Atari Teenage Riot, Sean Lennon, and At the Drive In have all had an affiliation with the label.
“Over the years the Grand Royal family had grown to include some of the most talented musicians and staff in the business. It’s tragic that the same growth has also produced an overhead and infrastructure that can no longer be viable.” Mike D also said “Our intentions were always simply to create a home for exciting music and the people who were passionate about it. It really sucks that we can’t continue to do that.” The decision to cease Grand Royal Records business operations was made on Friday the 31st of August.
