- The iconic London club has struck an agreement with property developers over the building of a housing block near its SE1 venue.
Ministry Of Sound has reached an agreement with the developers of a nearby housing block that will ensure the long-running club stays open.
The agreement with Englewood Ltd "will see the development go ahead and the nightclub protected," according to a Ministry Of Sound press release. The deal, which relates to a 41-storey development at the Eileen House in Elephant & Castle, has seen the club secure a Deed Of Easement—this means it can "continue to make the current levels of noise without fear of complaint from future residents of the development." The planning application for Eileen House was signed off by London mayor Boris Johnson on December 19th.
MOS chief executive Lohan Presencer says the agreement "safeguards our future while allowing new development in Southwark." He added: "This is a significant planning breakthrough for London, setting a precedent for how new housing and existing businesses can live together. We are grateful to the Mayor for his efforts and look forward to welcoming our new neighbours to the area." Englewood Ltd spokesman Chris Shaw echoed the sentiment: "This agreement means that both sides can truly co-exist in Southwark. We look forward to working together to achieve this objective." The development will bring 335 new homes to the area. Construction is due to begin on the site in early 2014.
