  • An operation is underway to stop Cairns Energy drilling for oil off the coast of Ibiza and Formentera. According to local newspaper Diario de Ibiza, an estimated 17,000 signatures were recorded over the weekend as residents and foreigners voiced their concerns about the prospective plans. Spearheaded by local collective Alianza Mar Blava, the campaign hopes to stop Scottish company Cairns Energy from surveying for hydrocarbons in the stretch of sea between Ibiza and Valencia. Should the drilling go ahead, it could have a grave effect on local marine life. The island's many beaches are also potentially at risk, which raises larger concerns as to the impact on Ibiza's thriving nightlife scene. Before presenting the petition to the local government, Alianza Mar Blava aims to reach 25,000 signatures. If you live in Ibiza and want to register your support, bring a valid ID or passport to Abel Matutes Vila Boulevard in Ibiza Town on Saturday, February 1st.
