  • Steve Goodman (AKA Kode9) and Toby Heys are releasing a boxset of sonic research under the name AUDiNT. Goodman balances his scholarly pursuits with his role as a DJ, producer and Hyperdub label chief, while Heys is a research fellow at Manchester University. Short for "Audio Intelligence," AUDiNT is the name of the duo's collaborative research project. This month they're releasing a triple-gatefold boxset called Martial Hauntology. Four years in the making, the boxset brings together their research of "the properties of newly emergent super-directional speakers when coupled with infrasonic devices." It comprises a 112-page book, 180g clear vinyl record and six Dead Record Archive cards. The 180g vinyl features two 20-minute sides with sonics written by Goodman and Heys, as well as a narration about "the affects of sound on 20th and 21st century populations." Martial Hauntology seems to expands on topics covered by Goodman in his book, Sonic Warfare, with Boomkat stating: "It explores the involvement of Alan Turing and The Ghost Army's pioneering use of three-deck mixes in World War 2, through the chopper-mounted loud-speaker terror of the US army's Wandering Soul campaign in Vietnam, to the deployment of High Frequencies as 'teen repellants,' the military applications of muzak and the current use of hyper-directional LRAD speakers in Iraq." AUDiNT Records will release Martial Hauntology on July 21st, 2014.
