  • Footwork dance crew The Era will join members of the Teklife collective in Chicago on Thursday, July 17th, to showcase the genre’s iconic dance style in its proper setting. “Footwork isn’t only about the music. It’s also about the dance, and they go together,” says Lite Bulb, The Era's leader and a respected dancer who has performed in London, New York City, and Barcelona. “You need both of them to understand it completely, and this is finally our chance to show our fans how the culture really grew up.” The venue, High Concept Labs, is centrally located in Pilsen—not far from footworking neighborhoods on the South and West Sides of the city, and also accessible to fans from the North Side. Lite Bulb and the other organizers hope to open the form up to a wider audience. “It used to be so much fun to come to footworking events, and now it’s too much of a risk," he says. "You’ve got violence, bad promoting, people using the culture to make money off of others. With this event we want people to just come out, hang out and enjoy themselves.” Held ahead of DJ Spinn’s appearance at the Pitchfork Music Festival on July 20th, the event is part of The Era's ongoing residency at High Concept Labs, organized with documentarian Wills Glasspiegel. DJ Spinn, DJ Earl, RP Boo and Taye will spin alongside the crew. You can watch a documentary about footwork music and dance, directed by Glasspiegel, here:
