- The famed reggae outfit have started a petition to rally support, with a council decision looming.
Channel One Sound System's fate at this year's Notting Hill Carnival is in the hands of Westminster Council, who will vote whether to grant them a permanent license.
Channel One have been a presence at Notting Hill on Carnival weekend for the past 32 years. The outfit told Red Bull: "Every year we have to apply for a license to play at Notting Hill Carnival. This year the Council told us to apply for a permanent license." The application has been subject to objections for locals, and now Westminster Council will vote on the matter at a licensing committee hearing.
The complaints lodged against Channel One include "excessive volume resulting in migraines, having to relocate pets because of the bass, low level damage to property, urination on property, broken glass etc, congestion of people traffic and impact on public safety, crime and disorder."
The outfit add: "When people buy a property in Notting Hill, they should know that the Carnival was there first. It's not something new. It's only two days out of the whole year. We take the restrictions very seriously, we always adhere to the curfew of 7 PM, we regularly monitor the sound levels and we keep a close eye on the crowd. The elders have a strong presence so the youngsters know not to cause any trouble in our area."
Channel One have launched a petition to rally support ahead of the council's decision. So far it has nearly 4,000 signatures.
