Dave Smith Instruments will release a modular component this month.
The American synth maker is jumping into the crowded field of Eurorack gear—the standard that all sorts of manufacturers, from tiny bespoke shops to (proportionately) bigger fish like DSI, have adopted to allow synthesis heads to put together highly customized modular systems. The result, as Create Digital Music noted today, is a unit that's governed by control voltage, not the MIDI standard Dave Smith is synonymous with. The component is called the DSM01, and it's a filter based on the company's famed Curtis design. The low-pass filter is switchable between -12 and -24 dB (it can self-oscillate in the latter), with a boost switch for overdriving the input signal. It also features a low-noise VCA.
