  • A fresh round of acts have been announced for the first Wonderfruit Festival, which takes place in Chonburi, Thailand, from December 19th through 21st. Organisers have added De La Soul, Little Dragon, Jamie Jones, Damian Lazarus, The Gaslamp Killer, Francesca Lombardo and Andrew Ashong to its bill. They'll join previously announced acts like Seth Troxler, Hercules & Love Affair and Fat Freddy's Drop at the festival, which is being organised by Scratch and Secret Productions. In addition to six stages of music, Wonderfruit will also hold outdoor installations, theatre performances, film screenings, talks, debates and workshops. We spoke to Montonn Jira, co-director of Scratch, to find out more about Wonderfruit's origins:
Why did you decide to launch a festival in Thailand? My business partner and I both reside here in Thailand, and in the process of launching our social enterprise, we teamed up with Secret Productions to create something new and interesting for our local and regional communities. We've lived here on and off since our pre-teen years and have always wanted to bring home new experiences that we've had the opportunity to witness on our travels and work projects abroad. Thailand has always been a key tourist magnet for its beautiful beaches and affordable travelling, and we believe there are vast opportunities to introduce western festival culture here while adapting it to highlight the Asian lifestyle. Tell us about the location you've picked. The location for Wonderfruit is out in Chonburi, about a 1.5 hour drive from Bangkok by car. The plot of land itself is owned and looked after by my partner's family, which also includes two golf courses in the surrounding areas. Being that we want to take our audience out of their usual surroundings and into a magical secluded environment, the Fields at Siam Country is perfect in that it is far enough from Bangkok yet still easy enough to get to. The site itself is also built for the long term, as we will be developing this festival over the next few years. The festival has a focus on sustainability and health, and there's lots of non-musical offerings. Can you expand on this? We wanted to make sure we weren't putting together just another music festival. With the basis of Wonderfruit stemming from our works in sustainability and eco-awareness, we've made sure to emphasise the arts as a whole. Aside from music, we've looked to performance artists, architects, designers, healers, fitness and wellbeing gurus, chefs, and experts on sustainable living to highlight our creative "pillars." Our ethos is to have all our activities revolve around building awareness and encouraging participation through demonstrating a sustainable lifestyle in a festival setting.
