  • Modal Electronics' next two synths have been detailed. Each of the Bristol bespoke synth maker's newest releases take up a rather different footprint. The 008 is a mammoth, all-analog polysynth, with 16 voltage-controlled oscillators at 16 sub-oscillators forming the basis of the sound. It features a complex filter design capable of the usual suspects (low-pass, band-pass, high-pass) along with more specialized types, totaling 16 in all. Though the synth itself is analog, it has the 4.3-inch, full-color display that's one of Modal's signatures, which should help users through the synth's bevy of features. The 001, on the other hand, is diminutive in size. It borrows heavily from Modal's 002 synth but packs the features into a smaller and less costly instrument. They describe the synth as "a true two-part multitimbral, duophonic synthesizer," driven by two "numerically-controlled oscillators" and a pair of sub-oscillators, all of which are taken from the 002. There's also a fair amount of connectivity here, with MIDI and CV supported. Modal's website has the full rundown on the pair. Modal Electronics will release the 001 in late May 2015 for an estimated retail price of $1,995. The 008 is set for release this summer for an estimated retail price TBD.
