  • FaltyDL has a new EP on the way titled Rich Prick Poor DIck. Due out September 18th, the record continues Drew Lustman's ongoing association with Ninja Tune. He's released a couple of albums on the label—2012's Hardcourage and last year's In The Wild—though his most recent LP, The Crystal Cowboy, came out in April 2015 through UK label Planet Mu. The A-side of the record, "Rich Prick Poor Dick," sees Lustman dabbling in techno, while B-side "Bookaloo" is a more percussive affair. We spoke with the producer via email to find out more:
Tell us about the inspiration about the EP's title. I am the rich prick poor dick. I feel like a rich prick when I am arguing over pennies and also a poor dick when I don't have two to rub together. Truth is I am sort of in the middle. It's also a shout out to a fictional friend of mine RIP, he was so angry all of the time I feel like he can finally rest now. It's amazing when you turn a page in life and stop fighting, or pick a new fight for that matter! Life unveils new layers and meanings constantly it's actually overwhelming. The way the internet comes up with ways for us to compartmentalize the aspects of growth and decomposition has become an incredibly useful tool. But it's just a tool and if you don't know how to use it properly you can hurt yourself, just like in carpentry. These 12-inches are tools for producers. They have many uses, some more helpful then others. So I believe a title should also have many uses. It's your most techno-sounding record to date. What inspired you to go down this path? Right on! I never feel like I am making a long-lasting decision when I tread into new territory. Partly it's always a challenge to myself but mostly it's just simply what I am feeling that day. I don't understand producers who only make or play one style of music. That seems completely insane to me. What would have come of myself if I only made records that sounded like Love Is A Liability since 2009? I'd be pretty bored right now I imagine. Not a diss to anyone doing the same thing, there are also some merits to that. Fleeting thoughts on genres result not in mastery of a sound that is very clear to me. I love techno, I get it. I didn't always, but I do now. My next 12-inch isn't techno really, and the one after that… I just can't say. So I would feel comfortable saying to you that walking the path of techno feels as comfortable as any musical path that I have walked before. I come from sampling and listening to hip-hop for years and years—we take what we want because we are the pricks and the dicks and the happy people too. Life. What does the rest of the year hold in store? More 12-inches. This the the space wherein I usually take full advantage of the opportunity to drown you in my makings—but I want to try a new approach. I will let things appear as they materialize. You know what I have learned to be 1000% cooler then saying what is forthcoming? Waiting and then saying, hey look at what I did. Not look out for this, but look at this right now. Release dates change, people change. What gets engulfed or digested by the people is the mere tip of the iceberg of a musician's output. In often cases 10% of their entire catalog or less. The larger conversation is happening inside the producer's head and reacting to what is around them. It might not be a good idea to spill all of that onto the floor, could be sticky and definitely slippery.
