- "Stream ripping has become a major threat to the music industry."
Universal, Warner Bros. and Sony have sued a stream ripping website in California federal court.
The site in question is YouTube-mp3.org, one of many that offer a simple service to extract and download the audio from YouTube videos. As Billboard reports, the labels claim that stream ripping is a threat to the industry, circumventing paid downloads and paid subscriptions. They also say that hundreds of millions of tracks are ripped every month, with YouTube-mp3.org responsible for around 40% of them. YouTube itself is not targeted or held responsible by the lawsuit.
