  • Sydney is the centre of attention this month with the record industry finally succeeding in a criminal charge for online piracy. While the record industry has been active in civil actions (i.e. suing for damages), this is the first time a criminal action has been successful (i.e. potential jail term). Three Sydney men have pleaded guilty. The jail term is yet to be determined, and although unlikely, could carry a jail term of up to five years. It's important to place this into context. While the three charged men Allegedly distributed pirated music worth $60 million which is a huge amount, they apparently did not profit from this as there was no charge from their site. This will be factored into the sentence. This is surely another sign that the tide is changing in the world of online music piracy and that the globes heaviest exponents of this illegal act should beware. RA recommends you listen to some of the worlds best online radio stations that stream music legally and with the options now available there is bound to be something on the web to tickle everyone’s musical fancy.
