Demdike Stare have released a new tape called Cosmogony, made with material from the INA GRM archives.
The 45-minute piece on the tape was commissioned by INA GRM for their annual Présences électronique festival, which took place this past April. Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker used their own GRM records—from the likes of Pierre Henry, Bernard Parmegiani, Guy Reibel and more—as well as a handful of effects units and two Octatracks to make the piece. When performing live, the duo used GRM's Acousmonium surround sound system to move sounds around the venue, a "full sonic potential [that] can't be replicated on tape unfortunately," as the duo say themselves.
GRM, or Groupe de Recherches Musicales, was founded by Pierre Schaeffer in 1958 and was later folded into the INA (Institut National Audiovisuel). Its archives make up one of the most comprehensive libraries of musique concrète and early electronic music.
