  • XL Recordings is releasing an EP of remixes of Jonny L's classic tune "Piper." The 12-inch includes four new remixes of the 1997 drum & bass track, with Powell, Zomby, Peverelist and Overmono (AKA Truss & Tessela) all signed on. "Piper" was originally part of UK producer Jonny L's seminal 1997 drum & bass album Sawtooth, which XL reissued last year. The LP is widely acknowledged as one of the most important drum & bass records of the '90s, signaling the genre's move from crossover electronica into the more minimal and dance floor-inclined techstep subgenre. (Jonny L would later go on to produce UK garage as part of True Steppers, and before "Piper," also had an early '90s hardcore hit in "Hurt You So.") "I was 18 when 'Piper' came out," says Peverelist. "It was a time when drum and bass was evolving rapidly, and tunes like 'Piper' were at the vanguard of that change." Watch the video for the original "Piper."
