- Inspired by coral reefs and marine life, it was produced with the media company Coral Morphologic.
Animal Collective will release an audiovisual album, Tangerine Reef, next month via Domino.
The label is calling it "a visual tone poem" consisting of "time-lapse and slow pans across surreal aquascapes of naturally fluorescent coral and cameos by alien-like reef creatures." The visual aspect comes from Coral Morphologic, an art-science duo formed by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician J.D. McKay.
Tangerine Reef grew out of a collaborative site-specific performance that Animal Collective and Coral Morphologic created for the Borscht Film Festival in Miami (where the latter are based), which "celebrated the cosmic synchronicity of sex on the reef," the label says. Despite appearances, there is no CGI or artificial enhancement used in the film—just time-lapse "micro-videography."
