Those fortunate enough to be in Tokyo last Friday would have been privileged to see the Opening Night of the Jeff Mills Contact Special residency at Club Womb but those who missed it need not worry, with the second night this coming Friday, shaping up to be another big one!
The October residency, which will see Jeff play three consecutive Fridays, follows on from his first ever residency at Luners (now Warehouse) and last year's Time Sensitive residency, which saw him play at Womb for four weeks and included additional mid-week dates at intimate DJ bars like Seco Bar.
Since he first started doing these month-long type of residencies in Tokyo back in 2002, Jeff says,
"They have matured conceptually, structurely and become much more complex. There is much more of a plan for the night such as a script. We can create something much more special like the synchronization of music, lighting and video at this residency".
After launching the residency last week with a guest live set by Japan's own Co-Fusion, this Friday will see Jeff joined by minimal techno act Scion (famous for their Arrange and Process Basic Channel CD on Tresor), who he has also especially chosen to be a part of his unique residency.
"Based on the concept we plan for each night, we have selected the artists because of the nature of the music they make. I chose Scion and all the other guests because I admire their work, " explains Jeff.
As with last week, tomorrow night will consist of three phases: 'Connection', where Jeff will spin an early 2-hour set; 'Infinite' featuring the debut performance of Berlin's Scion; and 'Illumination', where Jeff will aim to take us all on a journey to another 'abduction of light and sound'.
