Dutchman-in-New-York The Scumfrog hosts a party on the island of Skyros later this month. But to get there you don't need a boat, just a computer.

Skyros is a new 24-hour party island in the hugely popular 3-D virtual community Second Life (population: 1,774,389 nerds and counting). Skyros is owned and operated by Dutch house producer The Scumfrog as a space for virtual clubbers to meet, chat and "socialize" with others on the island, as well as listen to live streaming DJ sets.

The opening party is on next week in celebration of the release of Scumfrog’s new mix CD 'Mega Scum 01'. The party kicks off at 9:00 pm US EST and will take place in Balearic-style tents. The Scumfrog (in avatar form, of course) will play a live set alongside fellow players D:Fuse, Static Revenger, DJ Rap, and Richard Vission. Those are real DJs, by the way. Mr. Scum is promising a goodie bag (bottled water?) to those visitors who show up for the party, which will include instruction on how to move about (and presumably, dance) in this new world. Best to get your moves/keystrokes down pat before you make your way to the island. Don’t want to virtually embarrass yourself on the floor.

Nothing was on in meatspace this weekend, so RA decided to download the software and check out Second Life to see whether it rivals our amazing and glamorous first life. The first thing we had to do was choose an appropriately “international” surname from a preset list. RA is now “Anja Seisenbacher” (If you meet us at the party, say hi!) Then you have to choose a “look”. Hmm. Raver pants was not an option, so we went with “girl next door”. Program downloaded, installed, and then we got to the Welcome Centre, where we spent five minutes stumbling around, er, not knowing what we were doing. Lots of other newbies running into walls and staring off into space like drugged out zombies – had the party already finished? Hmm. After our exhaustive research into this new clubbing phenomenon, RA has come to one provisional conclusion: computer thingies are complicated.

The Scumfrog promises to meet party guests at the Welcome Centre on the day so you don’t get confused like we did.

The Scumfrog plays Skyros Island on December 13, 2006.

Sun, 17 Dec 2006classic chatroom style theme? sounds ok though. Going virtual clubbing sounds kinda neat and this way it's interactive. I was thinking of the whole virtual thing for quite some time, live feeds from clubs on the net is a great idea as well but not quite as sophisticated as this

Tue, 05 Dec 2006Is this the thing where its like a chatroom, but you can wander around like Leisure Suit Larry and talk to other people?I know kids who play a game like that, but they're penguins and go around talking to other penguins and play games like hangman and tictactoe!
