Want Ellen to show you around Berlin? The Bpitch controller is the latest tour guide in the Time Out CD/DVD concept series. 'Time Out Presents: The Other Side of Berlin' will be released in March.
The concept of the series is an interesting one: each release features a DVD of a DJ showing you around the shops, bars, clubs and record stores of the city, kinda like you've invited yourself over for a weekend on their couch. The series has been hosted by Fischerspooner (New York), Black Strobe (Paris) and Damian Lazarus (London), while a Los Angeles volume MCed by hip-hopper Madlib is also in the works for early next year.
Each DVD is accompanied by a mix CD, which pulls together music which is supposed to represent the flavour of the city. (Not very strictly, mind: Black Strobe's Paris mix featured the very un-French Bauhaus and Oliver Huntemann, while Lazarus chose Koze from Cologne and even Mogwai, which was bound to ruffle a few Scottish feathers – maybe he bought the records in London?)
Ellen Allien's Berlin mix looks more strictly down with the city concept, kicking off with David Bowie's classic ode to the city 'Helden' ('Heroes' sung in German) before moving onto the techno of regular Berlin folk Ricardo Villalobos, Booka Shade, Monolake, Rhythm & Sound and honorary citizen Richie Hawtin. The mix also includes a city tribute by transsexual New York punks Wayne County & the Electric Chairs.
