Herr Doppelwhipper swaps melody for acoustic African drums on his latest longplayer. 'Bambusbeats' is out in mid-March.

Cologne producer Gabriel Ananda is known for his tranced out approach to live techno, which reached its zenith with the breakout hits ‘Ihre Persönliche Glücksmelodie’ [2005] and last year’s ‘Doppelwhipper’, which charted at #17 in RA’s Top 30 tracks of 2006. Obviously a producer who knows his way around a melody then, but Ananda latest longplayer promises to dispense with all that, shifting focus more towards abstract sounds, Detroit synths as well as live acoustic drums. RA asked Ananda how it was working with a live drummer. Was a real human being easier to work with than, say, a 909? “It was a very interesting experience. I love acoustic sounds and instruments,” says Ananda. “Oliver Frank is very good on the jazz drums so I asked him if he’d like to take part. My idea was to produce an album that puts the focus on rhythm and acoustic drums to convey my emotions, and Oliver was the perfect one to collaborate with.” So there’s no truth in all those old drummer jokes then? He didn’t keep speeding up and slowing down? “Not at all!” Ananda laughs. “I had no need to complain.”

As a taster for the album, you can download a track from the album, the warm, skittering ‘Lamakova’ to check Ananda’s rhythm results for yourself. The rest of the album can be sampled at the album website.
