Dubstep teeters on the brink with the release of Shackleton & Appleblim’s Skull Disco back catalogue in a 2CD set. ‘Soundboy Punishments’ arrives next week.

Over the past two years, maverick producers Shackleton and Appleblim have been issuing 12”s vinyl via their Skull Disco label, forging a sound which at times owes as much to Berlin’s dub techno heritage as it does Bristol or Brixton. The link was cemented by last year’s Villalobos mix of Shackleton’s ‘Blood on Your Hands’, which opens the second CD here, while CD1 is a compilation of previous Skull Disco and CD2 tracks for Mordant, HotFlush ('New Dawn') as well as Appleblim’s previously unreleased ‘Gold and Silver’.

Both producers seem to be on the verge of greater popularity, with the varied likes of Cassy, Radio Slave and Kode 9 finding space for Shackleton and Skull Disco in their sets. If you want to check out the low-end fuss, head toward the May DMZ party in London where Appleblim will spin.
