Breaks label Functional Records celebrates ten years in the business with a new compilation, a fresh EP and a party in London this week. Based in Exeter, Functional got its start when the UK’s longest-running breaks night, Beatz & Bobz, kicked off in 1997. The night spawned a compilation series of the same name, to which Functional has drawn such breakbeat heavies as Tayo (‘Vol. 3’) and Atomic Hooligan with Jay Cunning (‘Vol. 5’). Watch out for Rennie Pilgrem next in line later this year – his installment was recorded at Beatz & Bobz in Exeter on 1 June. But before that Functional are issuing a new compilation, ‘Functional’s Finest Moments’, compiled and mixed by label stablemate Tom Real. The twelve tracks chronicle the label’s best and brightest over ten year, vacillating between the label’s older hits (Spoon Wizard’s remix of Slide’s ‘Frakkar’) and freshest wax (Tom Real vs. The Rogue Element’s ‘He’s So Hot Right Now’) on a track-by-track basis. Comp will sell with both mixed and unmixed versions. Also watch out for Fun050, the label’s fiftieth EP, a Tom Real & Rogue Element remix of Spoon Wizard’s ‘Shoe Monkey’. The track was originally released on Functional’s second EP ever, but now it gets a thoroughly decade-on refix courtesy of Breakspoll’s favourite remixers. On the flip is Una Funker’s ‘5th Suite’ as remixed by Will White, former drummer of late-‘90s big beat heroes Propellerheads. 'Functional’s Finest Moments' tracklist 1. Spoon Wizard – Shoe Monkey 2.
