Improvised techno trio Cobblestone Jazz announce a release date for their debut album. '23 Seconds' lands in October.

The Canadian trio of Mathew Jonson, Tyger Dhula and Danuel Tate originally shied away from committing their freestyle techno jams to the platter, preferring to restrict their real-time approach to the clubs. "For Cobblestone, performances have always been the focus," Jonson told RA last year.

But it seems there’s been a change of heart. '23 Seconds' is a studio album, but it promises to continue their commitment to melding loose improv with techno tightness: everything is recorded straight to two-track tape with arrangements conceived on the fly. Some tracks, such as 'Slap the Back', were conceived, recorded and mixed down in less than an hour. Pay attention, Axl Rose.

'23 Seconds' includes nods to Detroit ('PBD’), latest single ‘Lime In Da Coconut’ as well as the trancetastic 'W', currently doing the rounds on Cocoon's 'Compilation G'. The album comes with a second disc featuring a live set recorded at Mondo in Madrid in May this year as well as 2006 snake-charmer 'India in Me' and dancefloor monster 'Dump Truck'. Think bubbling vocodered melodies, rolling synths and Jonson's trademark basslines.

Tue, 12 Jul 2011I thought this was excellent. Having not heard a great deal of Cobblestone Jazz before, obviously unlike the reviewer, I really enjoyed it. The Live section of the album makes great listening with the pre-released tracks going straight in the box for playing as soon as possible.

Tue, 13 Apr 2010I thought their new album The Modern Deep Left Quartet was rated low (it gets 3.5), so I was wondering what 23 seconds got, and it only got 2.5.

Come on, I think its obvious that a lot of talent and professional know-how gushes out of this production.

Isn't it time to reconsider the way the ratings work here? Maybe use a team of knowledgeable ppl, and use its average or something.

Wed, 21 Nov 2007I understand the project after hearing both CDs and not the India in me and dump truck releases but it falls into chin stroking jazziness and is better for home listening rather than in a club environment for me.. and after seeing them at Technique in Leeds where they had a distinct jazz quartet approach no wonder Gilles Peterson is giving them props...

Mon, 19 Nov 2007wac review - cobblestone are pushing the boundaries of experimental/improv tech - saw them do an improv set recently which pissed all over some of the boring improv stuff ive seen from certain border community artists recently.
