Fancy a live jazz version of ‘Rej’? ‘Strings of Life’? ‘Trans-Europe Express’? Look no further than Christian Prommer's new record Drum Lesson Vol. 1.
Prommer, of Voom:Voom, Truby Trio and Fauna Flash fame, first hit upon the idea of covering techno jazz style with a one-off acoustic cover of Derrick May’s ‘Strings of Life’ early in 2007. That 12-inch got a release on Sonar Kollektiv and two thumbs up from May himself apparently, so the next logical step is an album of the same, this time covering the techno classics, including Âme’s ‘Rej’, Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’, Isolee’s ‘Beau Mot Plage’ and Jaydee’s ‘Plastic Dreams’.
Vol. 1 will be followed by Vol. 2 later this year, which promises to feature more original compositions and collabs with vocalists. Prommer’s jazzbo band are also a going concern live, too—check out this version of ‘Rej’ recorded live at Cargo in London for the evidence.
