Bratislava is worth a visit on its own, but if you need an excuse to visit, you couldn’t beat the Wilsonic Festival for motivation. Held on the banks of the Danube with a nice view over the city, the festival features plenty of leftfield, experimental and local electronic fare, all for the reasonable price off 550 Sk, which works out at just 17 euro. We hear the beer is reasonable, too. The focus of the festival is on local Central and Eastern European artists, but there is a full set of internationals playing as well including top French pranksters Nôze; the Apparat Band; New York disco producer Kelley Polar and techno DJs Jeff Milligan, Mike Shannon and Laurine Frost. There is also a heavy emphasis on dubstep, with Skream, Various Production, Flying Lotus and Little Dragon spinning. You get the idea – the focus is on the new and up and coming. So what about that name then? It turns out the fiercely independent Bratislava wanted to name itself “Wilsonov” after US President T.W. Wilson instead of joining Czechoslovakia. Planes to Bratislava fly from 45 European cities.
